The Science Behind CoreTherm

CoreTherm® is the only outpatient, thermo therapy treatment on the market that takes into account the fact that different patients have differently sized prostates and different intraprostatic blood flows.

The CoreTherm® Difference

No other Trans Urethral Microwave Thermotherapy (TUMT) procedure on the market, measures the temperature within the prostate during the entire treatment. Systems such as Targis® and Prostatron® by Urologix®, or Cooled TherMatrx ThermoTherapy™ by American Medical Systems® (AMS) only measure rectal and urethral temperature without measuring the temperature in the prostate during the procedure.

Studies have shown that the urethral temperature measured along the catheter or in the rectum says nothing about the intraprostatic temperature. (Venn et al, Int J Hyperthermia 1996, 12, 271-278). Time and temperature are key indicators in ensuring safety and efficacy of treatment and this can only be done effectively by directly monitoring the actual intraprostic temperature.

CoreTherm® technology is based on the proven theory that in order to reliably achieve thermally induced tissue necrosis (an opening for the urine to pass freely), specific intraprostatic temperatures must be reached and maintained for a certain period of time.

The amount of thermally (heat-generated) induced tissue necrosis can be estimated by using the measured intraprostatic temperature and the period of time that the tissue is exposed to a certain temperature. By measuring the temperature within the prostate, the physician can adjust the level of microwave power to achieve the desired therapeutic intraprostatic temperature (50˚C- 60˚C). Tissue necrosis and intraprostatic blood flow are also estimated and displayed on a computer screen to further guide the physician. For a good outcome, it is important that the correct temperature is used for the therapy. This helps avoid unnecessary injury or under-treatment, (if the temperatures are too low), which may result in having to be retreated eventually.

Don't settle for anything less, ask your doctor if you are a candidate for CoreTherm® and get a solution

to your problem as individual as YOU.
