There are many TUMT devices on the market, each offering a different design and different features. Variations exist in antenna design, cooling capabilities, heat fields created, and patterns of necrosis. Some machines are able to create higher temperatures than others. Given the variations regarding the appropriate qualities and applications of each thermotherapy treatment, it is understandable there is some confusion.
Most TUMT devices (e.g. Thermatrx® by AMS® and Targis® by Urologix®) monitor the power output to the prostate and urethral and rectal temperatures reached within the prostate. Studies have shown that the urethral temperature measured along the catheter or in the rectum says nothing about the intra-prostatic temperature (Venn et al, Int J Hyperthermia 1996, 12, 271-278). Only direct monitoring of prostatic temperature gives accurate predictions.
CoreTherm® is the only TUMT device that integrates the monitoring of intra- prostatic temperatures
to customize the thermal treatment to each patient.
CoreTherm® has incorporated temperature sensors into the design of the treatment catheter. Our unique patented method measures the actual core temperature inside the prostate during treatment. With CoreTherm®, microwave power can be precisely controlled to customize tissue necrosis and treatment time.
